WHERE TO START

FIRST STEPS WITHOUT ILLUSIONS

The most common reason a person earns nothing online isn’t a lack of money or a lack of ability. It’s spreading yourself thin. They read about arbitrage, watch videos about physical products, sign up on a freelance marketplace, and think about a Telegram channel on the side. And finish none of it.

This page is about picking one direction and taking it through to the first money. Not to a million — to the first money. After that it gets a great deal easier.

Pick one. Take it to a result. Only then look at the second.

First, an honest question to yourself

How many hours a week are you actually willing to spend on this? Not in an ideal world — in reality, with work, family and tiredness factored in. Your answer decides which direction fits.

  • 5–7 hours a week. Slow models only: your own content, a simple site built for search traffic. There won’t be fast money, but you won’t burn out either.
  • 10–15 hours. Now you can take client work — websites, ads. First money is realistic inside a month.
  • 20+ hours. You can go into traffic arbitrage, which needs daily work with numbers.
Important

If you can free up five hours a week and you pick a model that needs twenty, you aren’t «not trying hard enough». You picked the wrong thing. Those are different problems, and confusing them is expensive.

Three paths with a low entry barrier

1. Client work

Doing something a business needs, for money: websites, ad setup, social media design, bots. The most predictable entry: the result is visible immediately, and the money comes from a specific person rather than «someday».

Upside: no budget needed, only time and skill. Downside: it’s work traded for money, and it scales badly until you start hiring.

With neural networks the barrier collapsed: you can put together a decent website today without knowing how to code. We wrote about that separately — how to make money building websites.

2. Affiliate programs and arbitrage

You bring people to someone else’s product and get a percentage or a fixed sum per action. The ceiling is higher than in client work, and it scales with money.

Upside: no clients, no negotiations, everything measured in numbers. Downside: you need a budget for tests and solid nerves — the first funnels are almost always unprofitable. Better to start with free traffic sources so you learn on something other than your own money. The terms and the rules are broken down in the section affiliate programs.

3. Your own content

A channel, a blog, short videos. The slowest path and the most underrated: the audience you build works for any model afterwards.

Upside: no money needed at all. Downside: for the first few months it feels like writing into a void. Most people quit right here.

What you actually need at the start

A computer
Any working one. You can make content from a phone, but not the rest of it.
A separate email
Takes a minute to set up, and untangling mixed personal and work services later is painful.
A tracking sheet
Where you write down what you did, what you spent, what you got. Without it, in a month you won’t be able to tell whether what you’re doing works.
Money
For client work and content — zero. For arbitrage — an amount you wouldn’t mind losing entirely. Not your last money and not borrowed.

The first week, step by step

  1. Day 1. Pick one of the three directions. Write the choice down. That’s your protection against second-guessing a week later.
  2. Day 2. Find five people already doing it and look at what their work actually looks like. Not courses — real examples.
  3. Day 3–4. Do the smallest possible action. Not «study it», but do it: build one page, write one post, register with one affiliate network and find your way around its dashboard.
  4. Day 5. Show the result to a live human being. Feedback at this stage is worth more than one more video on YouTube.
  5. Day 6–7. Do the same thing a second time, but better. Repetition is what turns a one-off action into a skill.
The one-week check

If in seven days you haven’t completed a single finished action and have only read and watched — the problem isn’t the direction you picked. Change the approach: less information, more repetitions.

What not to touch in the first month

  • Expensive courses. Until you’ve done something with your own hands, you don’t know what you’re missing. You’ll buy the wrong thing.
  • Complex schemes on somebody else’s word. A funnel that worked for the author six months ago is most likely already dead.
  • Crypto and trading «for a fast start». That isn’t earning, it’s a market where professionals are playing against you.
  • Anything that asks you to put money in before you’ve earned any. More on that in the section scam schemes.

How to tell you’re on the right track

After a month you should have — not necessarily money, but three things: a finished result you can show; an understanding of which steps the process is made of; and numbers in your sheet, even if they’re zeros.

If all three are there, you’re fine — money is a matter of time. If none of them are, go back to week one and walk it honestly.
