MOTIVATION

WHY YOU CAN’T LEAN ON IT

Motivation is a pleasant thing and a lousy foundation. It arrives in waves: after a good video, after somebody else’s success, at the start of January. And it leaves the same way, usually on day three.

The people who reach a result aren’t different because they’re more motivated. They simply learned to work on the days when there is no motivation at all.

Motivation starts you. After that, only the routine carries you.

How this usually goes

Someone watches a video where a person talks about their income. Something lifts inside: I could do that too. That evening they make plans, buy a domain, sign up for three services. The next day they’re still up. Three days later the lift is gone and what’s left is ordinary, uninteresting work. So they stop.

Then comes the harmful part: they decide the problem is them. That they don’t want it badly enough. And they go looking for another dose of motivation instead of simply continuing to work without it.

The key idea

Not wanting to work is not a signal that you picked the wrong thing. It’s the ordinary state of roughly half the working days of any person alive, including the ones whose results inspired you. They just don’t publish those days.

How motivation differs from discipline

Motivation
An emotion. It comes and goes on its own and you don’t control it. Starts well, holds badly.
Discipline
An agreement with yourself that doesn’t depend on your mood. Runs evenly, bad days included.

The right attitude: use motivation as a starter. When a wave arrives, don’t make plans — do something in that moment that makes the work easier later. Set up your workspace, prepare templates, write out the steps for the week. That way the wave’s energy converts into easier future days instead of pretty plans. More on that — discipline.

What to do when you don’t feel like it

  1. Lower the entry barrier. Not «build the page», but «open the file». That’s often enough to pull you in — the resistance usually sits at the start, not in the process.
  2. Agree to five minutes. Honestly allow yourself to quit after five minutes. Most of the time you won’t. And if you do, then today really wasn’t the day.
  3. Do the easiest thing on the list. On a bad day, close out the small stuff. Momentum survives, the streak doesn’t break.
  4. Don’t decide anything important. The thought that maybe this is all pointless visits everyone on a low. Don’t make decisions about changing direction in that state.

Where steady fuel comes from

Waves of emotion get replaced by two things that work evenly.

Visible progress

Your brain needs proof the effort isn’t going into a void. There’s no money yet at the start, so record something else: pages built, texts written, days in the streak. Recorded progress works better than imagined progress.

A concrete reason

Not the slogan «I want freedom», but the specifics: what exactly you will be paying for with this money. The more concrete it is, the better it holds through the hard weeks.

What definitely isn’t worth doing

  • Hunting for another motivational video instead of working. That’s the same avoidance, just with a feeling of righteousness attached.
  • Promising yourself a lot while you’re on a high. The promises come from the motivated version of you, and the ordinary one has to keep them. Plan for your worst day, not your best.
  • Comparing yourself to other people’s shop windows. You see their result and your own routine. That comparison will always go against you, and it will always be unfair.
  • Waiting until you feel like it. You might never feel like it. The work starts before the wanting, not after it.
